The Inkling of an Idea

The That’s Pretty Dark Podcast explores the both the overt and subliminal darkness of children’s media from the 70s–00s. To launch their podcast and begin establishing branding, the podcast team approached me about creating a logo that was nostalgic, tactile, and sophisticated but not polished.

This logo evolved quite a bit from concept to final execution, so I have included some process. The logo type nods to 90s horror novel covers and the Are You Afraid of the Dark title slide, while harkening to primordial ooze or maybe the Millennial brain. The monster—our fear—is both attempting to swallow the light while being edged out by it. The flashlight acts as our tool for reflection and hope—that if we can confront and understand our fear, we can accept our trauma and use it to fuel our growth.
