Hamilton Gothic Neue “Character” Design

This series of illustrations was commissioned to highlight the typeface Hamilton Gothic Neue, a typeface designed in the late 1880’s and recently digitized for computer use. The prompt was “make it 1980’s.” The commissioner is also a big fan of the Japanese comic (manga) series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, which is characterized by its use of dramatic poses and high fashion as inspiration for character design.

Each illustration is informed by characters from the alphabet or uses the characters as prompts. The third illustration is inspired by an iconic Versace ad from the 80s that also inspires the cover for the “Steel Ball Run” arc in Jojo.

A prompt series done for Inktober 2019, this series features classic horror archetypes with a twist: as fashion illustrations with each character donning accessories that allude to who each character is.

Inspired by a digtial piece I had created as a teenager, I expanded the concept to include three characters and updated the color palette for a 70’s “flower power” look.
